Message from the Ulster Centre Chairman

For those of you reading this page for the first time I bid you welcome to the Centre. I wish you all a happy and enjoyable season ahead.

The Ulster Centre has been in existence for over 50 years and is going from strength to strength with an average of over 40 outfits at any rally and includes up to 60+ children who in particular get a lot out of their weekends away.

We will have a varied programme of rallies and events similar to previous years. Attendances are up so I hope we can provide sites that will accommodate all those wishing to join each rally. This you will find in the pages of this handbook. Rallies are for all and I would encourage you to give it a go. Always remember if you don’t have a rally there is also network of Certificated Locations to visit.

You will be made most welcome and there are new friendships to be made.  I would ask you all to remember that you share each rally site with many fellow members with different ideas as to how to enjoy the rally. We all co-exist in close proximity so it would be polite to show respect and consideration to others in everything that we do.

Having come through the worst winter we have had for many a year members must be feeling relieved that the summer is almost here. Holidays and the prospect of some interesting rallies are in front of us. In spite of the rising cost of fuel etc we are still out there making the most of the opportunities provided by our rally marshals. Disappointment at losing our New Year Rally and the meet in February due to frost created some ingenious ways for our members to get out in their vans. From parking in drives to staying on CL’s many still managed to get out and have their time with friends and enjoy the fellowship of caravanning. Since then the season has gradually got underway so we look forward to the summer proper with excitement and optimism.

So come on everyone, get out there, all you have to do is choose a rally and follow the instructions in the book. You will be made most welcome.

I look forward to seeing you all during the season ahead.

Noel Williams

Chairman

CARAVAN CLUB COMES TO ANTRIM

The Six Mile Water Caravan Park at the Lough Shore, Antrim, was the place of choice for the recent Caravan Club (Ulster Centre) rally.
Almost thirty caravans and motorhomes from throughout Ireland descended on the pictureseque setting.

Karen Steele, Development Manager (Visitor Servicing), comments, "The Sixmilewater Camping and Caravan Park is an excellent site for events of this type,
due to its central location and high quality onsite facilities.  It can accommodate up to 37 caravans with a substantial area for tents. This year, for the first time,
it's possible to book online
and in just eight weeks, almost 200 bookings have been taken for 2010. All the caravan pitches are fully booked for Easter and May Bank Holiday!"

Karen concludes, "There is no doubt that the Caravan Park is going from strength to strength. Such is its popularity, we are now open at weekends, on a trial basis,
during November 2010 and February 2011.
The large number of bookings is fantastic and we're looking forward to another very successful season, welcoming visitors from Antrim to America!”

Ulster Centre - Ballyronan Rally ~ 18-20 September 2009

This rally took place for the third year in a row at the four star commercial site alongside Ballyronan Marina, on the western shore of Lough Neagh. It is a super site, near to the village, alongside woodland and with a view over the water for many of the vans. Chief Rally Marshall was Mark Doherty, with Michele, Barra, Kerry & Lewis, ably assisted by Hugh MacNeill, Victor Proctor, Roy & Dorothy Shaw and Peter & Diane Dawson with Beth.

There were 53 outfits in attendance, making it the largest Ulster rally so far this year (National excepted). Five outfits from Leinster were very welcome at this event, including Christy Dunne, the Irish Division chairman with his wife Breda. The weather was mainly excellent, with a little soft rain dispelled by strong sunshine by 10.00am on the Saturday morning. Particularly heartening is the attendance of 61 children out of a total of 163 ralliers.

Sadly, for all, Kaye McCarrison was not in attendance, having died suddenly the weekend before. She was a very active club member since the early seventies and those who attended Ballyronan last year may well have sampled her excellent carrot & coriander soup. Roy Shaw gave a few words of appreciation of her life and all stood for a minute’s silence, with the club flag at half-mast. The thoughts of all were with her husband Jim and the Kelly family. Kaye’s daughter Dawn Kelly is on the Ulster Centre Committee.

On Friday evening, many booked times for the canoeing activity the next day. This was a major feat of organisation by Peter & Diane Dawson. Many young children were up very early on Saturday (the young Buicks were reportedly up from 6.15am!!), very excited and anticipating a great day of fun.

On the Saturday, about 60 people took part in the five canoeing sessions, which took place between 9am & 6pm. These were overseen by Deane, Jordan and Martin, who did a superb job of keeping all kids (& adults) entertained, wet and happy. No-one was allowed to just sit in a boat, all being challenged to do more adventurous things, which often resulted in a swim. Many of the older kids went ‘flying’ in their canoes, even if only from the jetty into the water! Many others enjoyed the water while the sessions proceeded and many children (Vicky Starrett & Raychel McEvoy in particular) seemed to spend most of the day jumping off the jetty. For those of a more sedentary disposition, there was much entertainment in watching from the waterside. Prizes were given for best participants at canoeing. Thomas Buick (boy), Donna Brennan (girl), Robert Buick (man), Gwen Johnston (lady) Well done to the teenagers (under the current chairmanship of Barra Doherty) who had subsidised the canoeing by raising money through a raffle and filling water barrels at earlier rallies. Thanks also go to all who contributed to this.

Lunch was served for all on-site, at the ‘Ballyronan Soup Kitchen’. With six types of soup on offer, there was more than enough for all. Many sat out at long tables and enjoyed the balmy weather.

There had been much speculation surrounding the mystery ‘3 ladies in a tub’ charity event scheduled after lunch. It was not certain who these ladies were, and if they would be ‘nominated’ in the same manner as the ‘three men in a tub’ event had occurred the year before. There are unconfirmed reports of a nervous-looking Jimmy Batten attempting to leave the site around this time.

The mystery ladies duly appeared, showing their style, before taking to the tub at the Marina slipway. Nigella, Patricia and ‘Tina Turner’ Trimble delighted all with their grace and style. Patricia was obviously very comfortable with her femininity, with a somewhat inadequate G-string glanced by an unfortunate few. Nigella, however, seemed somewhat uncomfortable in her ‘evening wear’ so early in the day. While it is unfair to single out any maiden over the others, many female club members admitted to being envious of Tina’s legs, but this was to a fair degree offset by the state of her ‘boat race’ (Cockney rhyming slang for face!). In a tragic development, Tina lost both of her frontal ‘buoyancy aids’ before a ‘Titanic’ tragedy struck the boat (thanks for that, Deane).

Later in the afternoon, a group photograph was taken of (nearly) all the children at the slipway. Robin McGarry kindly took this, while standing at the top of a stepladder he brought along for the job.

Saturday was a beautiful, calm and quiet evening at leisure, looking over the still Lough and there was a steady trade reported at the Chinese Restaurant on-site.

On Sunday morning, Maureen Parry had, as last year, organised a Charity Coffee morning for MacMillan Cancer Support. Alongside this was run a bring-and-buy sale to raise further funds. By the time all ralliers dispersed, a total of £500 had been raised for this worthy charity. Thanks also go to the teenagers for raising money through their ‘paperboy’ service on Sunday morning. Also thanks to Pat Brady, Trevor Trimble and Nigel Lamont, who raised more than £200 of this money through their ‘3 ladies in a tub’ event. Many thanks to all those who contributed, this being extremely generous, at nearly £10 per outfit. Many thanks also to the many people who helped make this a very enjoyable rally.

We look forward to returning to this location at the same time next year for more water-based fun & games.

Kaye McCarrison R.I.P.

It is with great sadness that I would like to inform you all that my Mum, Kaye McCarrison died this morning, 13th September 2009.  Unfortunately we do not know the cause of death as yet.

She and Dad were in Portugal to celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on 4th September.

It may be a 7-10 days before the funeral by the time we get her body flown home.

I will let you know when arrangements are made.

COLERAINE HIGH SCHOOL - North West 200 Weekend

The Ulster Centre held a very successful rally at Coleraine High School from 14th to 17th May 2009.  The site was an all weather sports pitch which could have held over 100 outfits. We also had the use of the changing rooms with showers and toilets available around the clock.
This rally is held each year to enable members to attend the NW200 practice session on Thursday evening and the races on Saturday.
We had a total of 51 outfits on site including 3 from Leinster Centre and 14 first timers.  Of the first timers, one had been in the Club since the 70's and has never rallied but he has said he will come back again.  The weather was a mixture of wet and dry but this didn't make any difference to the rally although the planned barbecue on Saturday was a washout with members collecting the burgers etc and taking them back to their vans to cook.   The wet conditions however also affected the racing and meant that the last 2 races of the day had to be cancelled due to the poor conditions.

2009 IRISH DIVISION NATIONAL RALLY REPORT

9th – 14th April 2009 - City of Derry Rugby Club – Hosted by the Ulster Centre

County Londonderry, Northern Ireland

The 58th Irish National Rally took place over the Easter Holiday weekend in the far North of Ireland, on spacious green rugby grounds, within easy reach of Derry City. There were 110 outfits in attendance from all areas within the British Isles and we had the pleasure of the presence of the current Chairman of the Caravan Club, Grenville Chamberlain, and the recent former Chairman, Bob Black, with their respective partners. The weather, for so early in the year was mainly very kind and much sunshine added to the enjoyment of all.

We had many green playing pitches where the children could roam wild-and-free, and the Rugby Club provided comfortable function rooms, and a well-stocked bar, in the club pavilion. During on-site functions the pleasure of the occasion was greatly enhanced by the entertainment and chat provided by Herbie, the hard working (and easy-talking) bar manager.  The children will remember his magic tricks for a long time to come!

The Official Opening & Ecumenical Service on Saturday morning was a well-paced and moving ceremony, enhanced by the participation of many young members and this occasion set the mood for a relaxed and friendly rally, where all felt very welcome. The Mayor of Londonderry, Mr Gerard Diver was present and there was excellent music provided by the extended Buick family from the City who were a great asset to this occasion. The officiating Clergy were the Reverend Robert Buick and Father Neal Carlin, who both spoke in an inspiring fashion. The Reverend Buick is also notable as an Ulster Centre Member. The ‘theme tune’ for this rally, Danny Boy (The Londonderry Air) was played - a world-famous Irish melody, which originated nearby. A collection was taken during this event in support of the essential work of the local Foyle Hospice. Thanks are due to Robin McGarry for organising a very enjoyable event.

The rally was in an excellent location and most visitors took the opportunity to explore the glories of the beautiful North Antrim coast and the Giant’s Causeway and to travel into scenic County Donegal.  Some even made their way to Malin Head, the northernmost tip of Ireland, which is of course, in the ‘South’ (i.e. Republic) of Ireland!  During the rally many explored the nearby city and enjoyed the guided walks around the circuit of the magnificent city walls and learned much about this interesting place. The tour was most entertaining, thanks to local personality and tour guide, Martin McCrossan, who enlightened us about many things, including the half-dozen or more names used for the city.

There was incidental sporting entertainment on Saturday afternoon provided by the local rugby club’s first fifteen who played, and won, an exciting at-home match. On the Saturday evening the Caravan Club Irish Division dinner dance was held in the nearby White Horse Hotel, and an excellent meal was followed by entertainment provided by The Hudson Blue Band until late.

On Sunday evening an Irish Cultural Night showed off local talent, including the McKinney School of Irish Dance, talented Harper Alison Buick and the Kelly Family (regular ralliers with the Ulster Centre) on bagpipes and drums. A talk on the history of the Irish Harp and the Irish Bagpipes by club member Mark Doherty added to the evening’s entertainment and Scottish members were particularly enlightened to learn about the superiority of the Irish pipes!

There were 54 children in attendance and a packed programme kept them well entertained throughout the rally. Thanks are due primarily to the hard-working Dawn Kelly, the Fairy Godmother of the Ulster Centre, for organising this. There were many Easter-themed craft activities to keep junior members occupied and there was an on-site treasure hunt for the little ones. There were games for all the children and there is still no result available for the relay races as the enthusiastic cheating by all teams made a winner impossible to pick!  Teenagers were well entertained, with trips to the cinema and bowling alley in the evenings and most families made trips to the local swimming pool, which has a wave machine. The teenagers also had a treasure hunt at a dramatic ancient stone fort on the top of a nearby hill, where they could see a large expanse of Ireland laid out below them.

On the Monday morning there was a good attendance at the Irish Division AGM, with Grenville Chamberlain and also Brian Richardson the Caravan Club Executive Secretary, in attendance. A wide range of subjects was covered under the very capable and entertaining chairmanship of Christy Dunne. Although much important business was addressed, rarely has an AGM been so entertaining, with more laughter than many a comedy show.  Paul Cahill finished the meeting with a brief presentation revealing the location of the 2010 Irish Division National Rally in Dungarvan, Co Waterford hosted by the Munster Centre.

On Monday evening entertainment was provided by the splendid local singer Johnnie Vegas, who kept the dance floor busy all evening. A few of the ‘less young’ members really let their hair down and are probably still recovering, step forward Maurice and Marie Flanagan!

Everyone dispersed on Tuesday afternoon, having sampled some of the delights of the North-West of Ireland during mainly kind weather and all look forward to next year’s Irish Division National, to be hosted by the Munster Centre on the South Coast at Dungarvan, County Waterford.  Also take note of the Halloween rally of the Ulster Centre, which is also to be held in the Northwest, in the wild and dramatic Glenveagh National Park, an Estate with Castle, at a lake in the middle of the Derryveagh Mountains of County Donegal.

Many thanks are due to the Ulster Centre Committee, under the able chairmanship of Neil Stevenson and the many Club members who gave freely and cheerfully of their time to make this a rally to remember.
